GREEK AND LATIN ROOTS

-dic or -dict,
which means to "say" or "declare"

1.   abdicate:  when monarchs or emperors give up their power

2.  addict:  someone who is psychologically dependent on a substance like alcohol

3.  addiction:  being dependent on something habit forming 

4. contradict:  to prove something negative or to show it to be false

5.  contradiction: opposition between two conflicting forces or ideas

6.  dictate: issue commands or orders as in a boss dictates their objective to employees

7.  dictator: a ruler who is unconstrained by laws

8.  dictatorship:  a form of government in which the ruler is unconstrained

9.  diction:  the manner in which something is expressed in words as in a letter or speech

10. dictionary: a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words and their definitions

11. edict: a formal or authoritative proclamation, as in a president's executive order

12. indicate: give evidence of

13. indict to accuse formally of a crime as in a lawyer accusing the defendant of a crime

14. indictment: an accusation or wrong doing and the physical piece of paper accusing someone of a crime

15. jurisdiction: the territory within which power can be exercised, as in the LAPD has jurisdiction here, but not 
   in Torrance

​16. malediction: the act of calling down a curse that evokes evil, as in another word for a curse

17. predict: to tell in advance, as in someone who guesses the outcome of a game

118. valedictorian: the student with the best grades in a graduating class

18. verdict: the findings of a jury on issues submitted to it for decision

19. vindictive: disposed to seek revenge
