6th Grade: EXPRESSIONS and EQUATIONS PAGE
Expressions and Equations: Videos
Here are some videos to help with understanding algebraic expressions and equations. The Khan Academy has plenty of videos on the subject of algebra and is an excellent resource for almost every math lesson. Math Antics is another excellent resource when it comes to understanding our math concepts and is actually quite entertaining. If and when you get lost, check out these two resources for a little more help. To the right are links to both websites:

EVERYDAY ALGEBRA: THE GAS STATION
WHEN WE AS ADULTS NEED TO GET GAS FOR OUR CARS, THIS PRESENTS AN ALGEBRAIC EQUATION. WE HAVE A TOTAL AMOUNT ($40) AND OUR CAR'S GAS TANK IS A CONSTANT (A 16 GALLON GAS TANK). THE VARIABLE IS ALWAYS THE COST OF A GALLON OF GAS (G).
FOR INSTANCE: 16 X G = 40.00. HOW MANY GALLONS COULD YOU GET IF GAS COSTS $3.75 OR $5.18? IN OTHER WORDS, G = 3.75 OR G = 5.18 OR IF YOU WANT TO FILL IT UP, AND GAS COSTS $3.75, WOULDN'T THE EQUATION LOOK LIKE THIS: 16 X 3.75 = TOTAL |
EVERYDAY ALGEBRA: THE MOVIE THEATER
GOING TO THE MOVIES WITH YOUR FAMILY IS AN EVERYDAY ALGEBRA PROBLEM. THERE IS THE COST OF A MOVIE TICKET (T), SODA (S), POPCORN (P), AND PERHAPS SOME RAISINETS (R) ARE DEMANDED AS WELL. THAT'S A LOT OF VARIABLES. PARENTS MAY ASK THEMSELVES CAN I SAVE MONEY BY GETTING A COMBO (C)? LET'S SAY THERE ARE 4 PEOPLE GOING TO THE MOVIES, HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
4(T) + 4(S) + 4(P) + 4(R) = TOTAL COST, OR 4(T) + 4(C) = TOTAL COST THE COST OF THESE ITEMS ARE OUR VARAIBLES, WHILE THE COEFFICIENT OF 4 MEANS EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY PLANS ON GETTING SNACKS AS WELL. FIND THE TOTAL COST IF: T = $12.00, S = $5.00, P = $5.50, R = $3.00 AND C = $5.50. WHICH WOULD BE MOST COST EFFICIENT? |
EVERYDAY ALGEBRA: BUYING A GOLDFISH
BUYING A GOLDFISH IS NOT CHEAP. THERE IS THE FISH (G)
THE BOWL (B), THE DECHLORINATOR (D), THE FOOD (F), AND THEN THE COST CAN CONTINUE ON UP DEPENDING ON THE GRAVEL AND OTHER ACCOUTREMENTS. WHAT ABOUT IF YOU WANT TO BUY 2 FISH, OR A BIGGER AQUARIUM? ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS ARE VARIABLES, UNTIL WE GO TO THE STORE AND FIND THE ACTUAL PRICE. BUT LET'S JUST DO THE BASICS: G = $1.29, B = $14.95, D = $2.39, AND FOOD $4.85 G + B + D + F = TOTAL COST, BUT WHAT IF I BOUGHT 5 GOLDFISH, TWO BOWLS, 1 DECHLORINATOR, AND 3 FOOD CONTAINERS: 5G + 2B + D + 3F = TOTAL COST |
EVERYDAY ALGEBRA: BUYING THE NEW ILLUSTRATED HARRY POTTER BOOK
THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR TEACHERS AND THOSE INTERESTED IN NOT PAYING THE FULL PRICE. I COULD TAKE A CHANCE AND HOPEFULLY FIND IT AT COSTCO FOR $22.36, BUT IT TAKES GAS AND TIME TO GET THERE. AMAZON PRIME MIGHT SELL IT FOR $24.OO, OR I COULD BUY IT FROM A DIFFERENT SELLER ON AMAZON FOR $19.95, BUT THEN I'D HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING AT $7.40. THERE IS THE OFF CHANCE I COULD FIND IT ON EBAY FOR $12.00 BUT THEN THEY WILL CHARGE $16.00 TO SHIP, SO WHAT DOES YOUR TEACHER DO, OR WHERE DOES YOUR TEACHER PURCHASE THE BOOK, IF HE WANTS TO PURCHASE 5 FOR BOOKS (B) FOR THE CLASSROOM?
HE MAKES AN ALGEBRA PROBLEM OUT OF IT OF COURSE: 5 X (P) = TOTAL COST OR 5P = TOTAL COST |
EVERYDAY ALGEBRA: THE STUDENT'S TIME SCHEDULING
VERY OFTEN WE HAVE TO JUGGLE TIME ON OUR WEEKDAYS. 6TH GRADERS MAY HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL, STUDY, GO TO PRACTICE, STUDY SOME MORE PERHAPS, AND PLAY. WE ALL AGREE THAT PLAY IS SUPER IMPORTANT AND USUALLY SCHEDULED FIRST, BUT WE MAY HAVE TO SACRIFICE SOME TIME IN ORDER TO STUDY FOR A SCIENCE QUIZ. BASICALLY YOU HAVE 1 HOUR OF HOMEWORK BUSINESS (H), PRACTICE IS 2 HOURS (P), AND STUDYING FOR THE SCIENCE QUIZ (S) SHOULD ONLY TAKE 30 MINUTES MORE, AND THEN PLAY (P). YOUR TOTAL TIME BEFORE GETTING READY FOR BED IS 5 HOURS. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE FOR PLAY?
H + P + S + P = 5 HOURS WHAT IF YOU NEED TO TAKE MORE TIME TO STUDY? WHAT IF BALLET PRACTICE IS 4 HOURS? |
EVERYDAY ALGEBRA: PAINTING THE CLASSROOM FRONT WALL
NOT ALL PAINT IS THE SAME.
A GALLON OF LOOP PREMIUM RECYCLED PAINT FROM WALMART (W) COSTS $15.88 CENTS, AND A GALLON OF BENJAMIN MOORE’S REGAL SELECT PAINT (B) COSTS $47.99 A GALLON. AS IT TURNS OUT, WE WILL NEED TO BUY 3 GALLONS OF PAINT TO DO THE SAME JOB AS ONE EXPENSIVE CAN, SO WHICH DO WE CHOOSE BASED ON PRICE? AND WHICH DO WE CHOOSE BASED ON TIME? WHICH CAN OF PAINT MAKES THE MOST SENSE OVERALL AND WHY? 3W = TOTAL COST OR B = TOTAL COST |
